(2-5-2026) DACULA, GEORGIA - Buford, GA — Former Georgia State Representative Farooq Mughal issued a firm statement today opposing any future proposal by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to convert a warehouse in the Mall of Georgia / Buford area—located within Georgia House District 105—into a federal processing or detention facility.
Mughal emphasized that the district is already facing significant congestion, overdevelopment, and infrastructure strain, and that any such federal project would place an unacceptable burden on local neighborhoods, schools, and public safety resources.
“I strongly oppose any DHS plan—current or future—to turn a warehouse in the Mall of Georgia area into a federal facility,” Mughal said. “Our community is already dealing with heavy traffic, overcrowded roads, and rapid development. Adding a federal operation of this scale would be completely inappropriate for District 105.”
Mughal noted that during his previous service in the Georgia House, he consistently stood with homeowners, families, and local leaders—regardless of political affiliation—when outside entities attempted to impose projects that did not align with the community’s moral needs.
Mughal stated, "During my time representing District 105, I worked closely with my constituents to safeguard our neighborhoods. If re-elected, I will persist in protecting our community from any proposals that may jeopardize our quality of life, strain our infrastructure, or undermine our values."
Mughal called on federal officials to engage local leaders early, conduct transparent community impact assessments, and ensure that any federal planning respects the character and capacity of the district.
“District 105 is not a dumping ground for rushed federal decisions,” Mughal said. “Our residents deserve thoughtful planning, responsible development, and leaders who will fight for them every step of the way.”
