Former State Representative Farooq Mughal Calls for Responsible Approach to Data Center Growth, Supports Temporary Moratorium on New Construction

DACULA, GA — Former State Representative Farooq Mughal is calling for a responsible and balanced approach to the rapid expansion of data centers across Georgia, supporting a temporary moratorium on new data center construction until stronger safeguards are in place to protect Georgia families, natural resources, and the state’s long-term energy future.

“As technology continues to grow, we must make sure that economic development does not come at the expense of working families, our environment, or our critical resources,” said former State Representative Farooq Mughal. “Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity and water. Without a stronger transition toward clean energy, increased demand could lead to higher energy costs for consumers and greater reliance on fossil fuels.”

Data centers are among the most energy-intensive facilities in the modern economy and require significant water resources for cooling operations. Mughal emphasized that Georgia must carefully evaluate where and how these facilities are developed, particularly in communities facing water supply challenges.

“Water is one of our most valuable resources, and we must prioritize the needs of residents, farmers, and local communities,” Mughal said. “I support preventing data center development in areas where water availability is already strained. Protecting access to clean and reliable water must remain a priority.”

Mughal also stressed the importance of encouraging innovation while ensuring that new developments align with Georgia’s environmental and economic goals.

“Georgia can continue to be a leader in technology and innovation, but growth must be responsible,” Mughal said. “We should welcome new industries while making sure they contribute to a sustainable future and do not place unnecessary burdens on taxpayers and communities.”

As Georgia continues to attract technology investments, Mughal believes state and local leaders must establish clear standards that balance economic opportunity with responsible resource management.
